1904-O VNC-31 011318

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Ear lobe is tripled at the bottom, which may not be seen in cases of weak strikes and mintage occurring toward the end of the die's production lifespan. The Date is set in the normal position. Markers: None.

NOTE: Die 2 specimens have slight doubling at the bridge of the nose.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Mint Mark is set high, tilted to the left, and positioned slightly to the right of normal. Die file lines are seen on the Eagle's wings. Markers: Die file lines are present in the lower extremities of the Eagle and in the Wreath Bow. In Die 2 cases, those lines are found in the Eagle's Wing-Neck Gap.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin has all the attributions associated with the VAM-31. While the coin certainly appears to be a VAM-31, I have noted it on my Page Heading as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified as a VAM-31 by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. And, it has not been confirmed as a VAM-31 by the VSS.
  • Because die file lines appear in the Eagle's wing-neck gap and slight doubling can be seen at the nose bridge, this is a Die 2 VAM-31.
  • This is a non-clashed version of this Variety. A clashed version is posted to Silver Dye Photography @ http://www.silverdye.us/wiki/Main/NeOr1904V31AW102717.
  • Die file lines can be seen on the Eagle's body and Wings, with swirling lines in the Right Wing.

SPECIAL NOTE: The A in DOLLAR is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P Base VAMs. The 1903-P VAM research being conducted by Silver Dye Photography members has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the A and of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. The 1904-O VAM-31, VAM-1B1, VAM-2A, VAM-13, VAM-22A1, VAM-35A, and VAM-35B all show the exact same doubling of the A. Unlike VAM-1B1, VAM-35A, and VAM-35B, which do not show Reverse Motto doubling, the VAM-31, VAM-2A, VAM-13, and VAM 22A1 do show Reverse Motto doubling. Further review of 1904-O Base VAMs will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography. Please see Section entitled Photographs of Special Interest, which contain photographs showing the unique Hub doubling.
