1880-P VNC-50A 020920

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: Date digits 80 are doubled; the second 8 at the lower left outside of the upper loop and the 0 at the outside top. The Lips and upper Chin are doubled as the result of a counterclash event. Markers: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: This Variety has the Hub doubling present on the 1878 C3c Reverse. Doubling is found on the outside edges of some Leaves of the Left and Right Laurel Wreaths, at the bottom of the right Bow Ribbon, and the tops of serifs of the A in the last word of the Reverse Legend, AMERICA to the Right Star. Markers: Fine vertical Die file lines in the middle part of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed).

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin has all of the attributes normally associated with the VAM-50A. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-50S, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it hasn't been certified by the PCGS, NGC, OR ANACS. It has, however, been confirmed as a VAM-50A by the VSS.
  • This is a single clash event Variety with the Obverse Clash Line exiting just above Liberty's Jaw and Neck Line junction. This line was created by the clashing of Liberty's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed).
  • Clash marks are seen exiting Liberty's Forehead and from the Nostril to the Chin. These marks were created by the clashing of the Left Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2.
  • The clash event left a minor clash mark in the Field below the Ribbon of the Phrygian Cap (the Cap Vee Region).
  • The Obverse Die does contain raised dots caused by the rusting of the Die.
  • A Reverse Clash Line is seen exiting the edge of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed) heading up toward the Field between the first and second words of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust.
  • Some Die file line activity can be seen in the Wing/Gap (the Crook).
  • A clash mark is seen between the Eagle's Left Wing (Right Wing as viewed) and Right Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2. This mark is often referred to as a Bat-Wing feature. It was created by the clashing of the edge of the lower third portion of the Phrygian Cap (the Cap Vee Region).
  • A line is present in the Field between the Olive Branch Leaves and Left Laurel Wreath Clusters #2 and #3. This feature was created by the clashing of Liberty's Nose profile.
  • Clash marks are seen in the Field off Right Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2. These marks were created by the clashing of Liberty's Nose to Chin region.
  • STATES in the Reverse Legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, looks to be slightly doubled at the foot of the letters.
  • The letters in the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust, also show doubling. In this case, the letters are shifted to the right, as viewed. Whether the letters are strike doubled or Hub doubled will require additional diagnostic review. It does, however, appear as though the letters contained in the word Trust are Hub doubled. Strike doubling is not a listable feature as that doubling is created at the time a Morgan Dollar is struck (minted), rather than at the time the Die minting that Morgan Dollar was made. Hub doubling is a listable feature as that doubling was created as a part of the Die making process. This type of doubling is passed along to each Morgan Dollar minted from that Die unless, of course, Die wear erases the Hub doubling.

SPECIAL NOTE: A feature that has been described as a "Snail" due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars that were minted from at least 1880 through 1904. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years. Other features of interest are also posted to this Section.

Comment: Personnally, I don't think much of this Die Marker. But, it is listed and thought I'd at least get a shot of it merely for documentation purposes. Comment:
