1888-P VNC-7B 042920

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is positioned a bit further left than normal and is slanted as the 1 is closer to Rim than the last 8. Markers: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The VAM-7 base series is known for the number of Die gouges and Die wear with erosion that is present on the Reverse. Markers: None.

SPECIAL NOTES:
  • The 1888-P VAM-7 base series is made up of five Die Gouge Stages. The VAM-7 (Stage 1), the VAM-7A (Stage 2), the VAM-7B (Stage 3), the VAM-7C (Stage 4), and the VAM-7D (Stage 5). While the VAMWorld guidance may be adequate for veteran Morgan Variety enthusiats, it isn't adequate enough for me to definitively establish the Die Gouge Stage of this specimen. I don't believe this specimen is a VAM-7, VAM-7A, or VAM-7D. I feel VAM-7B or VAM-7C is more likely. After waiting over a month for the discoverer of the VAM-7A,7B, and 7C to get back with me, I have decided that I will list this Variety as a VAM-7B.
  • I don't believe the use of the term "State" as noted on the VW site is appropriate for purposes of determining the sequence of the progression of each member of the VAM-7 base series family. Die state is an observation about the age of a Die within its production lifespan. Crisp features with no flow lines are signs of early mintage coins. Less crisp details with some flow lines are seen on middle mintage coins. Fading details and pronounced flow lining are found on late mintage coins. Die stage by contrast, note different events within a Die's life. These include things like "gouges", clashes, polishing jobs or breaks; and there can be multiple Die stages within a single Die state, With this in mind, you will note that for purposes of this presentation, I have already used and will continue to use the term "Stage" in lieu of "State" in my presentation.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin has most of the Die gouges found on the Varieties that make up the VAM-7 basis series family.
  • The VAM-7 has a number of Die gouge lines that run from the top inside edge of the Eagle's Left Wing, Right Wing as viewed, through the u and s in the last word in the Reverse Motto, Trust. Only the last line near the Wing is visible on this specimen.
  • A gouge is seen exiting the bottom of the Eagle's Right Wing, Left Wing as viewed.
  • A gouge is seen exiting the top of the middle Arrow Head and another is seen exiting the top of the bottom Arrow Head.
  • This specimen has Die gouges located in the Upper and Lower Tail Feathers. What it does not have is a Die gouge line located just above the Olive Branch.
  • Some of the middle leaves of the Left and Right Laurel Wreaths are very slightly doubled.
  • This specimen also has slight doubling at the inside right of the Ear wall. The only time that this attributable feature is noted as part of a basic VAM-7 base series member description is in reference to the VAM-7D (Die Gouge Stage 5).

NOTE:
  • A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars minted from at least 1881 through 1904. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years.
