1878-S VNC-8A 121120

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: This is a Die 2 specimen of the VAM-8A as a small Die chip is seen just below the Phrygian Cap Fold. Additionally, the point of the 4th Right Star is broken. Markers: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: A Die chip is present on the lower serif of the letter E in the first word of the Reverse Legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. A feather has been engraved between the Eagle's Right Wing and Leg (Left Wing and Leg as viewed). Both Wings show signs of over polishing and an engraved patch can be seen in the middle part of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed). The Wings also show some signs that the Reverse Die has become rusted as small raised dots can be seen on the Wings. There are areas of the Wings that show signs of overpolishing and Die file lines are present on both. The entire Reverse Die has been the recipient of significant polishing as thin Die file lines are seen in the Field. Markers: None.

This is a Top 30 1878-S Morgan Variety.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin has all the attributes associated with VAM-8A (Die 2). While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-8A, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS as a VAM-8A. It has, however, been confirmed as a VAM-8A by the VSS.
  • The Obverse Legend, LIBERTY, is doubled.
  • Liberty's Ear appears slightly doubled at the left and right inside and on the outside of the Ear and at the bottom of the Lobe. The doubling can be viewed in the Section entitled Photographs of Special Interest. Other interesting features can be seen in that Section as well.
  • Digit 7 of the Date is slightly doubled at the top and at the right outside of the of the column (as viewed).
  • Both upper and lower Tail Feathers show significant overpolishing and Die deterioration is noticeable.
  • It appears that a Die chip has developed in the top inside cavity of the I and the o in the first two words of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust.
