1904-O VAM-30B 041120

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: This is a doubled profile Variety. And, three diagonal die file lines are found at the top right outside of the Ear. Markers: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: There a number of Die scratches found on the top edge of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed). The Mint Mark is set high and tilted slightly to the left. Denticle impressions are present to the left, and in the cavity, of the letter D in DOLLAR. Additionally, raised dots are visable above and to the right of the letter E in ONE. Markers: None.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin contains all of the features normally associated with the VAM-30B and has been certified as a VAM-30B by the ANACS.
  • A Die crack can be seen running through Liberty's Bust Point and connecting to the top of the first digit of the Date. Another crack is seen connecting the foot of Date digits 1, 9, and 0.
  • A single Die file line is seen exiting the tip of the Olive Branch heading toward the Bow.
  • A bulge has developed in the Field just below the Bow.

SPECIAL NOTES:
  • The A in DOLLAR is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P Base VAMs. The 1903-P VAM research being conducted by Silver Dye Photography members has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the A and of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. The 1904-O VAM-30B shows clear hub doubling of the A and the letters of the Reverse Motto. Images of these Hub doubled features can be viewed in the section entitled Photographs of Special Interest. Further review of 1904-O Morgan Silver Dollars will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography.
  • A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars minted from at least 1881 through 1904. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years.
  • There might be a displacement of the field within the lower portion of the Wing/Neck Gap (Crook) and there appears to be a bulge at the bottom of the Bow. I have included photos of both features and have posted them to the Section entitled Photographs of Special Interest for your consideration.
