1882-O VNC-17B 091519
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: Date digits 882 contain metal in the lower loop of 8s and the upper loop of the 2. This is an Obverse clashed Variety that has produced letter transfers. The
st seen in the Reverse Motto,
In God We Trust, is positioned in the Hair Vee. A Die break with Field displacement is seen exiting the Rim, running through the first
U in the second word of the Obverse Motto,
E. PLURIBUS UNUM, and ending in the hair above Liberty's forehead.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Mint Mark is tilted to the left.
Markers: None.
Note: This Variety has made the WOW list.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes associated with the VAM-17B. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-17B, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS as a VAM-17B. However, it has it been confirmed as a VAM-17B by the VSS.
- The lower loop of the digit 2 of the Date contains a line. Could this be a doubled or re-punched digit?
- A Die crack extends from just above the 3rd Left Star, across the Neck Point region, through the lower hair above the Date, and ending at the 3rd Right Star.
- An Obverse Clash Line can be seen just below the join of Liberty's Jaw and Neck. However, the clash event didn't create a letter transfer along the Neck Line. The clash line was created by the clashing of the edge of the Eagle's Right Wing, Left Wing as viewed.
- Die file lines are seen in the D Void and in the area surrounding the D Void.
- A Die file line or gouge is seen entering and exiting the back portion of Liberty's Nostril.
- A Die gouge runs from the upper left arm of the Y in the Obverse Motto, LIBERTY, across the bottom the T, and into the front portion of Liberty's hair. The gouge ends just above the forehead. An additional gouge runs from the bottom the Y and into the left side of the left Cotton Blossom, as viewed.
- Slight doubling is seen at the top of the Phrygian Cap, with a small gouge exiting the front of the Cap Bun.
- A Die crack begins in the Field just below the second U of the last word of the Obverse Legend, E. PLURIBUS UNUM, crosses the Cap Bun, and ends in the Field just above the Cap top. The crack resumes at the Right Wheat Leaf, crosses the Wheat Kernels, and ends at the Left Wheat Leaf, as viewed.
- A Wreath clash is seen at the back of Liberty's Cap across from the UM of UNUM. That clash was created by the clashing of Right Laurel Wreath Cluster #3.
- A Wreath clash is also seen in the Field off the lower third portion of the Cap (Cap Vee Area). That clash was created by the clashing of Right Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2.
- A die gouge begins at the lower Cotton Leaf and travels through the lower portion of the Cap, and terminates in the hair near the Small Bear Claw.
- There is no discernable Reverse Clash Line exiting the edge of the Right Wing and extending upward to In of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. There is, however, a Bat-Wing feature seen between the Eagle's Left Wing and Right Laurel Wreath Clusters #1 and #2. That feature was created by the clashing of the lower third portion of the Cap (Cap Vee Area).
- A small gouge is seen below the inside talon of the Eagle's left foot, right foot as viewed. This gouge is noted as a Reverse Die Marker in the case of the 1882-O VAM-17A. However, it is not specifically designated a Die Marker in the case of the VAM-17B.
