1903-P VAM-9 (REVISED) 072818

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

NOTE: The 1903-P VAM-9 was Revised by Leroy Van Allen based upon a July 2, 2018 review request submitted by Rod Meader.

  • An Obverse die marker was added.
  • A Reverse die marker was added.
  • Changed the Reverse feature information to include Hub doubling. Please note that the C4 design used on the 1903-P is doubled on all working dies due to a doubled Master Hub and Die. Because the C4 design was also used to mint Morgans from the years 1900 through 1904, further reseach to determine the extent of Hub doubling on post-1899 Morgans seems to be warranted.

The Base Description and Feature Details now reads as follows:

9 III2 8 - C4l (Doubled 1, Near Date, Doubled Reverse Lettering) (189) I-2 R-5
Obverse III2 8 - 1 slightly doubled below upper crossbar. Date set further left than normal. Die marker - Long horizontal die scratch on neck-hair above designer's initial M.
Reverse C4l - Hub doubling of legend and motto letters similar to VAM 10. Die marker - Couple short diagonal polishing lines at top inside of space to right of eagle's left leg.

Comment: Rimward Hub doubling of the second and third words of the Reverse Legend, UNITED "STATES OF" AMERICA (Arrowed). Also note that all of the words of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust, have been significantly impacted by Hub doubling. Comment: Mr. Leroy Van Allen has noted that apparently all 1903-P Morgans have Hub doubled Reverses.
