1878-P VNC-84A 100817
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: This is a clashed Die with a partially incused
n of the first word in the Reverse Motto,
In God We Trust, seen next to Liberty's Neck Line. The
L in the Obverse Legend,
LIBERTY, is flat with a washed out look and is described as a "Washed Out L". Because VAM-84A has all of the attributes applicable to the VAM-84, the following attributes are added: (1) due to overpolishing, the nostril is no longer visible, (2) the letters
E PLURB and
S in
E PLURIBUS are doubled, (3) all Right Stars and six out of the seven Left Stars are doubled, (4)
LIBERTY is slightly doubled to the left (as viewed), and (5) a dash can be seen below the first 8, with some specimens having a die chip at the top left inside of the upper loop.
Marker: A crack emerges from the Denticles below the 2nd Right Star and travels to the bottom left tip of the 3rd Right Star. In Ultra Late Die State (ULDS) VAM-84s, the crack exits the bottom right tip of the 3rd Right Star and travels to the bottom left tip of the 4th Right Star.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The clash event produced a partially raised
E in the Obverse Legend. The
E transfer is located below the 5th Tail Feather and only the verticle bar and the middle serif are visible. A raised Obverse Designer's Initial,*M*, is visible above the
d in the second word of the Reverse Motto,
God. The
D in
DOLLAR is broken at the bottom. In later mintage VAM-84As, a die chip can be seen at the top of the Right Wreath. Because VAM-84A has all of the attributes applicable to the VAM-84, the following attributes are added: (1) a die chip is seen on the Eagle's Right Wing (sixth feather down and next to the body), (2) over polishing of the Eagle's Left Wing has produced areas in which the Field has been exposed, and (3) over polishing of the Eagle's upper and lower Tail Feather has produced areas of Field exposure.
Marker: None.
NOTE: The VAM-84A is a Super CD and a Top 30 1878 Variety.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes normally associated with the VAM-84A. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-84A, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS; nor has it been confirmed by VSS.
- This VAM-84A is an ULDS specimen as the crack that begins below the 2nd Right Star runs all the the way to the bottom left tip of the 4th Right Star.
- The Ear appears to be doubled at the inside right wall.
- The Date appears doubled at the 1 and the 7 (notches generally indicate doubling).
- Overpolishing is apparent at the back of the lower third portion of the Phrygian Cap and at the edge of the lower hair.
- Unknown debris is seen between the Rim and the 7th Right Star and between the Rim and the U and R in the second word of the Reverse Legend, PLURIBUS.
Images of the apparent doubling of the Date digits (Image 1) and the Ear (Images 2 and 3) can be found in the Section entiled Photographs of Special Interest.

Comment: A crack that begins under the 2nd Right Star travels to the 3rd Right Star, and ends at the bottom left tip of the 4th Right Star. |
Comment: Although the dash under the first 8 is an atribution rather than a die marker, it is a key identifier of the VAM-84A. Therefore, I felt it appropriate to place this attribute in the Die Markers Section as well as in the Section entitled Attributed Feature. |
