1888-O VAM-1A3 060919
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: This is an Obverse clashed Variety. It contains a Die break that begins in the Denticles above the
R in the Obverse Motto,
E. PLURIBUs UNUM, travels through the
R widening significantly at that point, and ends with a die chip positioned next to the bottom left portion of the
L in the Obverse Legend,
LIBERTY.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The clash event resulted in the transfer of the letters BER of the Obverse Legend. Those letters a visible under Tail Feathers 5, 6, and 7 (left side of the Tail Feathers, as viewed). The Mint Mark is set high.
Markers: None.
NOTE: The VAM-1A3 is listed as a WOW and Top 100 Variety.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes normally associated with the VAM-1A3, and has been certified as a VAM-1A3 by the PCGS.
- It appears that a very faint incused Mint Mark from the Reverse is seen just above the right Wheat Leaf.
- The clash event also produced transfers of some leaves of Right Laurel Wreath Cluster #5.
- A straight Die file line can be seen starting at the Denticles above the first T of the second word of the Reverse Legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, touching the top left side of the I in the first word of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust, and terminating at the edge of the Right Wing (Left Wing as Viewed).
- The letter r in the last word of the Reverse Motto, Trust, has been visibly altered due to grease fill. This weak looking r was created when a small amount of grease used to lubricate the coining press filled the letter on the Die. When this happened the metal could not flow into the letter. In some cases, a letter or letters affected by a greasy Die can become totally eliminated from view (becomes missing).
- There is heavy Die file line action seen in the Eagle's Wing-Neck Gap.
- While this is a BER letter transfer Variety, the area associated with the clash and transfer of the stalks and lower portions of the Cotton Bolls from the Obverse, which should appear just above the Arrow Heads, did not transfer. If you don't see such a transfer in that location, the chance of a transfer of Obverse Legend letter(s) is low. This Variety is an exception to general expectations in this regard. The BER transfer occurred without the transfer of stalks and lower portion of the Cotton Bolls.
SPECIAL NOTE: A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars over a period of many years. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at
Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years and in this specimen's case, the Snail has lost its definition. Other features of interest are also posted to this Section.
