1900-O VNC-23C 050117 WORK IN PROCESSED
SPECIAL ADVISORY: Andy and I have the VAM-23C. We noticed that the VAM-23C just might be incorrectly listed. We don't think it fits into the VAM-23 base. This VAM obviously has a Slanted Normal Date, not a Slanted Near Date. All VAM-23 family members have a Near Slant Date. Additionally, this VAM has a doubled Ear. Another VW member noticed the Date abnormality and has submitted the VAM-23C to LVA for review. This VAM may be re-listed in a different base series.
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date, which is slanted, is set a bit further left than is normal but still falls within normal tolerance (A Normal Slanted Date). Please note that the VAMWorld's VAM-23C Page describes the Date as being a
Near Slanted Date, rather than a Normal Slanted Date.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Mint Mark is set high and tilted slightly to the right. A crack runs along the top of
ATES of the second word of the Reverse Legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and produces a small displaced field between the
ES. A chip can be seen at the top left corner of the last
S of
STATES.
Markers: None.
SPECIAL NOTE: The Date is a Normal Slanted Date and Liberty's Ear is doubled on the inside right Ear Wall. The VW's VAM-23C Page notes that this Variety's Date is a
Near Slanted Date, which does not match what this Morgan clearly show; and the VAM-23C Page makes no mention of Liberty's Ear being doubled.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes normally associated with the VAM-23C. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-23C, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it hasn't been certified by the PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or confirmed as a VAM-23C by VSS.
- Lady Liberty's Ear is doubled at the lower and right inside Ear wall. This feature is not mentioned as a listable attribute.
- This specimen's Mint Mark appears to be tilted slightly to the right. This tilt is not noted as an attribute or feature of a VAM-23C; perhaps it was determined that the tilt fell within normal tolerance accorded to a Mint Mark that is set in an upright position.
- A die crack runs from the Rim above the first T of the second word in the Reverse Legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and connects to the top of the A. A die break can be seen behind the Denticle where the Rim crack begins.
- A die crack can be seen running along the top of the last word of the Reverse Legend.
- Starting from the O in the first word of the Denomination, ONE DOLLAR, a crack traverses through the Left Reverse Star and along the tops of UNIT of the first word of the Reverse Legend. The crack then enters into the middle portions of the ED, crosses the tip of the Eagle's Right Wing, and travels through the first four letters of STATES. Another crack is seen crossing the Right Wing and through the In, the first word of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust.

Comment: The Date, which is slanted, is set a bit further left than is normal but still falls within the tolerance accorded a Normal Date (a Normal Slated Date). With regard to the slanted nature of the Date, please note the differences in the distance between the foot of each digit and the Denticle or Denticles below that digit. From the left to the right, the distance from each digit and it's anchoring Denticle or Denticles increases slightly causing a slanting of the Date. |
Comment: The Mint Mark is set high and appears to be tilted slightly to the right. This apparent tilting is not noted as an attribute of a VAM-23C. Apparently, the degree of tilt was not significant enough to be considered a listable attribute. |

Comment: Die break that caused a sight displacement of the Field between the ES. |
Comment: Die chipped S. |

Comment: The Ear is doubled at the right inside wall. Because this feature was never listed as an attribute of the VAM-23C, it may have been considered Die wear doubling. Wear doubling is not listable as an attribute. |

Comment: An interesting feature is seen above the S. While I am not sure what caused this feature, I can only quess that some subsurface cracking may have been responsible its creation. |
