1900-P VNC-24 070319
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: All Right Stars and Left Stars 1 and 2 are quintupled rimward. The remaining Left Stars are either doubled or tripled. The letters
NUM of the last word of the Obverse Motto,
E. PLURIBUS UNUM, are either doubled or tripled.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: An extra Olive, which is positioned to the right of the Olive connected to the Olive Branch, is present on this Variety. The Olive Leaves of the top Cluster and the first two Leaves in the lower Cluster are doubled. The Eagle's Eye, Nostril, all of the Eagle's Left Wing (Right Wing as viewed), the lower feathers of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed), and the ends of Tail Feather's 1-4 are doubled. Most of the letters in the Reverse Motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the lower edge of the top Leaves of the Right Laurel Wreath are doubled.
Markers: None.
SPECIAL NOTE: This coin was certified as a VAM-11 by ANACS. After a complete review of this coin's features, and after requesting and receiving input from contributors to Silver Dye Photography, I have determined that this Morgan was incorrectly attributed. Instead of being a VAM-11, this coin is a VAM-24. This determination was primarily based on a careful examination of Liberty's Eye. A VAM-11 possesses a normal Eye while a VAM-24 possesses an Alligator Eye. The Alligator Eye feature is present on this Morgan. Both the VAM-11 and VAM-24 share the same Reverse Die.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin contains all of the features normally associated with the VAM-24. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-24, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified as a VAM-24 by PCGS, ANACS, NGC, nor has it been confirmed as a VAM-24 by VSS.
- Liberty's Eye possesses the Alligator Eye feature, a key determinative factor when establishing whether the Variety is a VAM-11 or a VAM-24.
- The first two Right Stars show some signs of being multiply doubled, but I could not get a definitive shot of doubling because this specimen is slabbed. For the same reason, I could not capture the doubling that should be present on the NUM of the Obverse Motto.
- The Date appears to be set exactly 2.5 Denticles from the Bust Point. This setting is applicable to the VAM-24. The VAM-11 Date is set a bit to the left at 2.2 Denticles from the Bust Point.
NOTES:
- The A in DOLLAR is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P Base VAMs. The 1903-P VAM research being conducted by Silver Dye Photography members has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the A and of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. This 1900-P VNC-24 also shows a doubling of the A and the Reverse Motto. With regard to this anomally, further review of the 1900-P Base VAMs will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography. Please see the section entitled Photographs of Special Interest.
- A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars over a period of many years. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years.

Comment: The Date appears to be set at 2.5 Denticles from the Neck Point. As a cautionary note, do not use the Date position when trying to establish a coin's Variety status; VAM-11 or VAM-24. An Alligator Eye is the key determinative feature. |
