1900-P VAM-16A 021716
THIS VARIETY NEVER RECEIVED AN APPROVAL FROM LEROY VAN ALLEN AS A VARIETY. CONSEQUENTLY, THE VAM-16A SHOULD NOT, IN MY OPINION, APPEAR ON THE VAMWORLD SITE. HOWEVER, I DECIDED TO PHOTO-DOCUMENT THIS UNOFFICIAL VARIETY, NONETHELESS.
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set in the normal position with the tops of 900 showing in Denticles as raised curved bars in single Denticle space below 9, in two adjacent denticle spaces below first 0, and in single denticle space to left of second 0. Heavy Die file line action is seen in the Wheat Leaves.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The VAM-16A contains and extra Olive. Doubling can be seen at base of left Olive Leaf Cluster, at the back of lower Arrow Head, the right side of the Eagle’s Nostril and Eye, and in the upper feathers of Eagle’s Left Wing. Pitting is seen about the Eagle's Neck.
Markers: None.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin contains all of the features normally associated with the VAM-16A and has been certified as a VAM-16A by the NGC.
- In addition to the significant die file line activity in the Wheat Leaves area under RIB found in the second word in the Obverse Motto, E. PLURIBUS UNUM, the activity is also seen in the letters of the Obverse Legend, LIBERTY.
- It appears that the bottom edge of all of the Arrow Heads are doubled and at the bottom of the Arrow Shafts.
SPECIAL NOTES:
- The A in DOLLAR is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P Base VAMs. The 1903-P VAM research being conducted by Silver Dye Photography members has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the A and of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. This specimen of the 1900-P VAM-16A also shows a doubling of the A and the Reverse Motto. With regard to this anomally, further review of the 1900-P Base VAMs will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography. Please see the section entitled Photographs of Special Interest.
- A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars over a period of many years. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years.
