1902-O VAM-38 041919

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: Liberty's profile is doubled. Die gouges are seen at the R and the I in the Obverse Motto, E. PLURIBUS UNUM. On the R, the Die gouge is located at the top left; and on the I, the Die gouge is located at the lower left. Marker: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: An additional Olive is set just right of the Olive attached to the Olive Branch. Doubling is seen to the right of the Olives, at the base of the Olive Leaf Custers, and at the top two Leaves of the bottom Leaf Cluster. Doubling is found at the right of the Eagle's Nostril and Eye, the middle feathers of the Eagle's Left Wing (Right Wing as viewed). The top edges of the Arrow Feathers, middle of the Arrow Shafts, and at the back portion of the lower Arrow Head are doubled as well. The Mint Mark is centered in the upright position, but is set a bit to the right. Marker: None.

*Notable Secondary Diagnostics*:
  • Die file scratch on Liberty's Jaw/Neck Junction.
  • Die file lines in the Wheat Kernels.
  • Die file line at the Eagle's Neck.
  • Die file line at the Wreath Bow.
These features can be viewed in the section entitled Notable Secondary Diagnostics.

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin has all of the attributes applicable to the VAM-38 and has been certified as a VAM-38 by the ANACS.
  • The specimen's Obverse Profile doubling does not show well. As an aside, I have always viewed Profile doubling with some skepticism. In many cases, I could easily see such doubling as actually strike doubling and not of the Die itself.

SPECIAL NOTES:
  • The A in the Denomination, ONE DOLLAR, is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P VAMs. This doubling was created at the time the Master Hub was prepared and was transferred to the working dies. Not only is the A doubled, the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust, appears to be doubled in the same manner as the A. The 1903-P VAM research conducted by Silver Dye Photography has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the A and the Reverse Motto. The 1902-O VAM-38 show the same doubling of the A and the Reverse Motto. Images of these Hub doubled features can be viewed at the section entitled Photographs of Special Interest. Further review of 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollars will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography.
  • A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars over a period of many years. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years.
