1904-O VNC-36 051419
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set at the right edge of what is considered as a normally placed Date (Normal Date). Liberty's profile shows doubling as does the top part of the Phrygian Cap and the edge of the lower Hair.
Markers: Diagonal Die scratches or file lines are seen in the Hair in the area of the D Void. This Die marker is seen on Die #2 of VAM-30.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Mint Mark is set high and tilts a bit left. Some of the letters of the Reverse Legend,
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, are doubled rimward, as are the tops of some of the letters of the Reverse Motto,
In God We Trust. Additionally, some leaves of the Left Laurel Wreath are doubled rimward.
Markers: None.
NOTE: The VAM-36 is a later mintage of the VAM-36A as the Denticle impressions seen on the VAM-36A are no longer visable on the VAM-36.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin contains all of the features normally associated with the VAM-36. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-36, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified as a VAM-36 by PCGS, ANACS, NGC, nor has it been confirmed as a VAM-36 by VSS.
- A Die file line or scratch is located in the Field just off the lower portion of Liberty's Eye.
- A number of Die scratches are seen on Liberty's Chin.
- Die file line action is seen in and around the Bow.
SPECIAL NOTES:
- The A in DOLLAR is Hub doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P Base VAMs. The 1903-P VAM research being conducted by Silver Dye Photography members has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the A and of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust. The VAM-36 shows a doubling of the A and the Reverse Motto. Some VAMs show doubling of both features, while others show doubling to one of the features (most notably the Hub doubled A. Images of these Hub doubled features that are present on the VAM-36 can be viewed in the section entitled Photographs of Special Interest. Further review of 1904-O Morgan Silver Dollars will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography.
- A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars over a period of many years. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years and in this specimen's case, the Snail has lost its definition. Other features of interest are also posted to this Section.
