1902-O VAM-42 101319
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set left of normal (a Near Date). Liberty's Eyelid is doubled at the front bottom edge. The Ear is doubled at the inside right wall and at the bottom of the Ear Lobe. Doubling continues at the edge of the hair above the Ear, and at the lower edge of the lower Cotton Leaves.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Mint Mark is set a bit high and centered with a slight shift to the left. An extra Olive is seen to the right of the primary Olive connected to the Olive Branch. Doubling is seen on the top edge of the Olive Branch to the right of the Olives, at the base of the middle and lower Olive Leaf Clusters, and at the lower edges of the Olive Leaves. Doubling continues at the top of the Eagle's Left Wing (Right Wing as Viewed), to the right of the Eagle's Beak, Nostril, and inside of the Eye. Doubling is seen at the tops of the Arrow Feathers and at the back of the bottom Arrow Head.
Markers: None.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes applicable to the VAM-42 and has been certified as a VAM-42 by the ANACS.
SPECIAL NOTES:
- A feature that has been described as a Snail due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars minted from 1880 to 1904. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can also be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. The Snail's appearance has changed over the years. While the Snail is all but invisible on this VAM-42 specimen, it is there nonetheless.
- Although showing the effects of Post Mint Damage (PMD), the A in the Denomination, ONE DOLLAR, is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P VAMs. This doubling was created at the time the Master Hub was prepared and was transferred to the working dies. Not only is the A doubled, the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust, is doubled in the same manner as the A. The 1903-P VAM research conducted by Silver Dye Photography has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the A and the Reverse Motto. The 1902-O VAM-42 show the same doubling of the A and the Reverse Motto. Images of these Hub doubled features can be viewed at the section entitled Photographs of Special Interest. Further review of 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollars will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography.

Comment: Hub doubled In God We Trust. Note how many of the letters are losing their definition; squished is a good word to describe how the letters appear. |
