1887-P VNC-12A 051616
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: Clashed die with partial incused
st in the last word of the Reverse Motto,
In God We Trust, showing in right Hair Vee. Late mintages of the VAM-12A do not have the
st transfer as a result of additional clashing and instead has a plateau die crack. Some specimens show a faint clashed
n of the first word of the Reverse Motto,
In, as a tick at the Liberty's Neck Line. The VAM-12A possesses what is called an Alligator Eye due to the verticle double line positioned in front of wall of the Eyeball. The Obverse Legend,
LIBERTY, is doubled.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: None.

SPECIAL NOTE: A feature that has been described as a "snail" due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars over a period of many years. Please see

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes associated with the VAM-12A. While it certainly appears to be a VAM-12A, my Page Heading notes it as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified as a VAM-12A by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. It has, however, been confirmed as a VAM-12A by VSS.
- This Variety is listed as a Normal Date.
- An Obverse Clash Line is seen exiting Liberty's Neck Line just below the joint of Liberty's Jaw and Neck Line. There is no evidence that the clash event produced an n transfer.
- The letters of the Obverse Motto, E. PLURIBUS UNUM, are doubled rimward.
- The Right Stars and Left Stars are doubled rimward as well.
- A Reverse Clash Line is seen exiting the edge of the Eagle's Right Wing.
- There is die file line activity in the Wing-Neck Gap.
- The clash event produced a Bat-Wing feature located between the Eagle's Left and Left Laurel Wreath Cluster #1 and #2.
- The clash event left clash marks between the Eagle's Right Wing and Left Laurel Wreath Cluster #1 and #2.
