1883-O VNC-33 072421
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set in the normal position. The first 8 contains a Die file line at the top left inside of the lower loop and the 3 is doubled at the lower ball. A thick Hub debris impression can be found in the Small Bear Claw below the Phryigian Cap.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Mint Mark is set just right of what is considered normal positioning and appears to be tilted slight to the left. This is one of the O/O Mint Marks and is doubled at the right inside with a Die file line at the top.
Markers: None.
NOTE: In 2019, VAM 33 and VAM-33A were combined and listed as VAM-33.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes associated with the VAM-33. While this coin certainly appears to be a VAM-33, my Page Heading notes this as a Variety Not Certified (VNC) as it has not been certified by the PCGS, NGC, or ANACS as a VAM-33.
- Die file lines can be seen exiting the hairline below the Ear and in the Field of Liberty's cheek and neck. Additionally, Die file line activity can been in Liberty's hair.
- Die file lines are found inside the cavity of the Ear.
- A Die gouge is present in the left arm and of the Y in the Obverse Legend, LIBERTY.
- Die file lines are seen in and around the Wreath Bow and in the outer areas of Cluster #1 of both Left and Right Laurel Wreath.
- Die file lines are present in the upper and lower Tail Feathers and in the Wing/Neck Gap.
- Thick Die file line can be seen the Field below the A in the second word of the Denomination, DOLLAR.
- A gouge or Die crack is present in the Field just to the left of the first L in the second word of the Denomination, DOLLAR.
SPECIAL NOTE: A feature that has been described as a "Snail" due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars that were minted from at least 1881 through 1904. A photograph of this interesting looking feature can be viewed in the Section entitled
Features of Special Interest. Other interesting features can be viewed in the Section as well.
