Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

1882-P VAM-28 I3R6 AW032919

Obverse: III2-27
  • 1 slightly doubled on the bottom of the flag. Lower loop of both 8's contain die chips and polish lines. Possible top of 8 showing in denticle space between the 8's as sharply curved bar. Small raised dot on the surface of the 2 in middle of the bottom crossbar with chips/polish lines in both the upper and lower openings.
  • Dense fine polish lines throughout the hair.
  • Polish lines in the LIBERTY. Large die chip in the top of the E.
  • Dense polish lines in the cotton bolls.
  • Five sharp top raised curved gouges at denticles 1 & 2 left stars.
Reverse: C3a.
  • Pitting in/around the wreath bow, upper/lower tail feathers and wings.
  • Die crack at left star and ON of ONE, across left wing tip, at right star, and LAR of DOLLAR.
  • Rod's Snail on the wreath leaf above the R of DOLLAR.
Comments: The EDS VAM 28 is an extremely elusive variety, 3 are known in this state (as of Jan. 2013). The Mid/late states (Former VAM 1A or "Dot 2") of this variety are far easier to locate. The early state that exhibits the 5 distinct gouges has proven to be quite rare. Coins 1,2 and 3 are EDS.

Mid to Late state of this obverse die. Note that there are only remnants of the gouges remaining below the 1 & 2 left stars. There is also minor doubling at the inside right of the ear opening. Inside the wreath bow and the eagle's wing-neck gap are clean at the LDS stage.
