1878-S VAM-101 071020
Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.
OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: A concaved Field is present near the Rim. Die chips are seen on the
E of the Obverse Motto,
E PLURIBUS UNUM.
Markers: None.
REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The letters
STAT in the second word of the Reverse Legend,
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, are shallow. The
R in the last word of the Reverse Motto,
In God We Trust, is not broken. The Wing Feather at the bottom of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed) is engraved. Over polishing of both Wings and bottom Left Upper Tail Feathers has occurred. The tops of the letters
ONE DOL of the Denomination,
ONE DOLLAR, are doubled.
Markers: None.
COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all the attributes associated with the VAM-101 and has been certified as a VAM-101 by the ANACS.
- I can't confirm that this specimen of the VAM-101 actually possesses an Obverse concave Field. It may be there, but I just can't see it.
- One of the tips of the 4th Right Star is broken.
- There appears to be a slight Die break on the edge of one of the leaves on Right Laurel Wreath Cluster #4. This feature can be viewed in the Section entitled Photographs of Special Interest. Other features of interest are also found in that Section.

Comment: This appears to be an insignificant Die break. What is interesting is that it is found in the exact location of a feature known as the "Snail". The Snail feature is of the Die and is found on many coins minted from 1881 through 1904. |
