st, can be see in the Hair Vee.

NOTE: There are additional listable features that can be seen on the VAM-31A. Those features weren't included in the information contained in VAMWorld's VAM-31A Page. These additional attributable features include the doubling of Liberty's Ear, the Eagle's Nostril and Eye, the upper Feathers of the Eagle's Left Wing, and the back part of the lower Arrow Head. COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
- This coin has all of the attributes applicable to the VAM-31A and has been certified as a VAM-31A by the ANACS.
- Liberty's Ear is doubled at the inside right Ear Wall and at the bottom of the Ear Lobe. The left inside may be doubled as well.
- The Eagle's Nostril and Eye are doubled.
- The upper feathers of the Eagle's Left Wing (Right Wing as viewed) are doubled.
- The back side of the lower Arrow Head is doubled.
SPECIAL NOTE: The
A in the Denomination,
ONE DOLLAR, is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P VAMs. This doubling was created at the time the Master Hub was prepared and was transferred to the working dies. Not only is the
A doubled, the Reverse Motto,
In God We Trust, appears to be doubled in the same manner as the
A. The 1903-P VAM research conducted by Silver Dye Photography has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show doubling of the
A and the Reverse Motto. The 1902-O VAM-31A show the same doubling of the
A and the Reverse Motto. Images of these Hub doubled features can be viewed at the section entitled
Photographs of Special Interest. Further review of 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollars will be conducted under the auspices of Silver Dye Photography.

Comment: Obverse Clash Line. This feature was created by the clashing of the Eagle's Right Wing (Left Wing as viewed). |
|

Comment: Reverse Clash Line length is not as long as it appears on earlier mintage VAM-31As. This shorter Clash Line is what remains of the original Line after the mint worker initiated repair to that area through Die polishing. Why the repair done on the Clash Line did not eliminate it is a mystery to me. The Reverse Clash Line was created by the clashing of Liberty's Neck Line. |
|
|
Comment: Lip Clash no longer visible. Also a sign that repair was made to this area through Die polishing. |

Comment: Bat-Wing feature. Why this was not repaired at the same time as the Reverse Clash Line and the Lip Clash is unknown to me. May have been just not worth the time to eliminate that feature through polishing. The Bat-Wing feature was created by the clashing of the bottom third portion of the Phrygian Cap (the Cap Vee area). |
Comment: Doubling of Left Wing (Right Wing as viewed). |

Comment: Ear Doubling. Inside right Ear wall as well as at the bottom of the Ear Lobe. Possible doubling on inside left. It is my understanding that the doubling of the inside of the Ear is most likely wear doubling and that doubling at the bottom of the Ear Lobe is generally associated with true Die doubling. However, I'm sure there are those who would totally disagree with what I have just noted. |
Comment: Doubling of Nostril and Eye. The Nostril doubling is definite, don't know about the Eye. |
|
|
Comment: Doubling at the back of the lower Arrow Head.. |
Comment: Hub doubled A. |
|
|
Comment: Slight Hub doubling of Reverse Motto, in particular "We Trust". |
Comment: The "Snail". Looks decidedly un-snailish. This feature has appeared on Morgan Silve Dollars from at least 1883 to 1904 and is of the Die. |
