Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

Obverse: III2-19
  • Date set in Normal position. 1 doubled at top left as two notches and at bottom of lower crossbar with notch at right. Lower loop of the 3 doubled on the inside with 3 slightly lower than the rest of the date numbers.
  • Remnant of a wreath clash at the right side of the wheat leaf at top of cap.
  • Very weak wing clash at Liberty's neck. No letter transfer.
  • Beveled fields at top of Phrygian cap and back of cap ribbon from over polishing to remove die clash marks.
  • Markers Die chips inside of the ear.
Reverse C3a
  • Bridge die crack above the mint mark at bottom of bow.
  • Weak hair clash marks on the right side of eagles neck.
  • Weak cap vee clash at inside of RW1.
  • Very weak neck clash at the top of eagles right wing. Clash does not engage the n of In. No letter transfer.
  • Polish lines in the field above the eagle's wings and around head.
  • Some heavy die polishing/beveling at eagle's left side of left foot, between the end of the olive branch and lower arrow shaft, and to the left of lower tail feather #1.
  • Die crack at the top right of N, across the tops of ITED of UNITED and wing tip, terminating at top left side of first S in STATES.
  • Die crack from the denticles above the A in STATES and across the TE.
  • Weak die crack from the denticles above the O in OF going thru the F and into the left wing tip.

  • VAM-22: no clash; exact marriage of VAM 22A in an earlier stage.
  • VAM-22A: one clash and a repolishing. Fairly strong E reverse.
  • VAM-36A: obverse die changed, E reverse stage with no clash on obv (unreported).
  • VAM-36A: second clash, E weakened, DO from DOLLAR on obverse.
  • VAM-36A: third clash and second repolishing,E fades off die.
  • VAM-36: later strikings of 3-clash stage with E worn, crushed, and polished away.
  • VAM-36: 4th clash with doubled line in hair and strong crack under bow knot
