1901-O VAM-10 043025

Characteristics are described with a degree of granularity intended for die identification more so than for die classification. A characteristic may not span the entire die progression. Thus, not all characteristics may be present in any one coin.

OBVERSE ATTRIBUTES: The Date is set to the left of what is considered within normal Date tolerance. Marker: None.

REVERSE ATTRIBUTES: . The letters in the Motto, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, are doubled radially. The letters in the Legend, In God We Trust, are doubled rimward as is the top of the Eagle's Head. The Mint Mark is set high high and centerally positioned. Markers:_ The N in UNITED is slighly tripled at the lower serif. There is a single horizontal Die polishing line at the Eagle's Right Leg triangle (Left triangle as viewed).

COMMENTS ON THIS COIN:
  • This coin has all of the attributes applicable to the VAM-10 and has been certified as a VAM-10 by the ANACS.
  • The Reverse Motto, In God We Trust, is Hub doubled.
  • The A in DOLLAR may be Hub doubled; but, it may just look that way due to a strike error that causes the A to appear Hub doubled. Futher review is warranted.
  • The E in the Denomination appears to be double under the top left serif, as viewed.
  • The Letter D, L, L, and R, are obviously double under the left serif, as viewed. This feature was not mentioned as an attributable feature.

SPECIAL NOTE: The A in DOLLAR is doubled in the exact same manner as seen in many 1903-P Base VAMs. The 1903-P VAM research the was conducted by Silver Dye Photography (SDP) members has revealed that many 1903-P VAMS show hub doubling of the Reverse Motto, In God We Trust and the A in DOLLAR. Additionally, the 1904-O VAM-31, VAM-1B1, VAM-2A, VAM-13, VAM-22A1, VAM-35A, and VAM-35B all show the exact same doubling of the A. Unlike VAM-1B1, VAM-35A, and VAM-35B, which do not show Reverse Motto doubling, the VAM-31, VAM-2A, VAM-13, and VAM 22A1 do show Reverse Motto doubling. Further review of 1904-O Base VAMs will be conducted under the auspices of the SDP. This unique Hub doubling has been seen on other post-1879 Morgan Silver Dollars and should also be included in the aforementioned review. This doubling is seen on the 1901-S VAM-10 as well.

ADDTIONAL NOTE:

  • A feature that has been described as a "Snail" due to its shape, appears on a leaf of Right Wreath Cluster #4. This feature is of the Hub and is seen on Morgan Silver Dollars that were minted from at least 1881 through 1904. A photograph of this feature can be viewed at Photographs of Special Interest. Other features of interest are included in the section entitled Photographs of Special Interest.
